The Wanton Rose

A true account of three castaways and the sea that wanted them

Tortuga, with Teach four days out. Lorenzo, a merchant with cargo he will not name, finds Captain Breegarra a gap in the blockade. She has a fast ship, a worthless commission and no use for the men he offers her, and before the afternoon is out he has misjudged everyone at her table. They sail at dusk with their lamps lit. What comes after is stranger. Breegarra wakes alone on the shore of an empty island, with a shot through her chest and no wound to show for it, and cold marks on her skin that hurt to touch. She is not the last to come ashore marked. Forty years on, Lorenzo is still telling it: the story of Breegarra, Titania and Baxter, as he saw it, and as he learned it after.
